A Day of Climate Action and Community Spirit: The Big Green Trail 2026

Date

8 July 2026

Sunshine, laughter and feel-good vibes filled Central Park on Saturday 20 June as hundreds of people headed out for this year’s Big Green Trail.

More than just a day out, the Trail gave people of all ages the chance to explore simple, practical ways to make a difference, whether that meant connecting with nature, travelling more sustainably, trying something creative or discovering how small changes at home can add up to meaningful change.

As families, friends and neighbours followed the Trail through the park, they discovered activities designed to spark curiosity and conversation. Children enthusiastically collected stamps in their Trail packs, while adults picked up ideas they could take home and build into everyday life.

From hands-on activities and creative workshops to games and challenges, the focus was on showing that climate action doesn’t have to be complicated and overwhelming, it can start with small, fun changes.

"It was great to bring the kids outdoors and learn something new."

Nature ran right through the heart of the Trial. Visitors explored local wildlife, got hands-on with crafts and discovered how Plymouth’s green and blue spaces support both people and nature. With the city’s unique connection to the sea and wild spaces, visitors explore the importance of healthy coastlines, marine habitats and urban biodiversity.

There was also a strong focus on flooding, something Plymouth is experiencing more often. Through an exciting, inflatable obstacle course, families learned how slowing the flow of water can help reduce flood risk, and what that looks like in practice here in Plymouth.

Across the park, people were encouraged to explore at their own pace, ask questions and start something new. Whether collecting sunflower seeds to grow at home or getting up close to creative installations, the day brought environmental ideas to life in a way that felt accessible and relevant.

The Trail offered practical inspiration for everyday life, especially when it comes to how we travel. Transport is one of Plymouth’s largest sources of carbon emissions in the city and many visitors used the event to explore more sustainable options.

From cycling and walking routes to public transport and electric vehicles, people discovered alternatives that could help reduce emissions, save money and improve their health. For many, it was about seeing what’s possible and finding options that work for their daily lives.

"Without the Big Green Trail bus, we wouldn't have been able to get here today."

Others focused on the home, learning simple ways to reduce energy use, cut bills and stay comfortable year-round. With buildings and heating some of the biggest contributors of emissions in the city, these small changes matter and conversations on the day made that feel more achievable.

Creative activities invited visitors to rethink waste and try repair and reuse, while quieter spaces like the Local Climate Legends Living Room offered a chance to reflect on inspiring stories from across the city. Performances from Plymouth’s Climate Choir brought people together to share songs of hope.

As Plymouth continues its journey towards becoming a greener, more resilient city, events like the Big Green Trail play an important role in helping people understand what that future can look like and how they can be a part of it.

From discovering local wildlife and growing flowers for pollinators to exploring new travel choices and reducing waste at home, visitors left with more than just a fun day out. They left with ideas, inspiration and changes they can make in their own lives.

And perhaps, that’s what the Big Green Trail is all about: showing that positive change starts close to home and together, Plymouth’s communities have the power to shape a healthier, greener future for everyone.
