A Space Made from Waste

Jabulani CIC are looking to expand their premises on Union Street using circular construction. That is, creating a space from waste.

Jabulani CIC is a multi-cultural food court comprised of small start-up businesses run by BAME (Black, Asian, minority ethnic) entrepreneurs. Currently located at The Plot on Union Street, they have been given the chance to expand their premises to a vacant site next door.

Jabulani 2.0 hopes to create a zero-carbon food and social space made primarily from donated materials. Turning the traditional design process on its head, architects Studio Skein hope to build a bank of donated materials and design the new site with what's available, creating a space that's beautiful, low carbon and diverting waste from landfill.

With funding from Innovate UK, Jabulani and Studio Skein will be measuring the cost of construction, carbon and social impacts, and investigating how the process can be scaled up and replicated for future builds.
