Babcock International Wins Net Zero Award

Babcock International has been recognised at the Ministry of Defence (MOD) Sanctuary Awards, winning the Net Zero Resource Efficiency category for a ground breaking sustainability project based right here in Plymouth.

The award celebrates Babcock’s pioneering work in developing green hydrogen fuel from an unexpected source, contaminated wastewater. This innovative project, based at the Devonport facility, demonstrates how radical fuel-switching technologies can support the decarbonisation of maritime operations and dockyard infrastructure.

At the heart of the initiative is a small-scale hydrogen production plant, designed to test the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of producing clean hydrogen fuel as an alternative to HVO diesel. The system includes advanced technology for hydrogen production, storage, and utilisation, offering a glimpse into a future where wastewater becomes a valuable resource in a maritime circular economy.

This project not only showcases a viable route to zero-carbon fuel production but also lays the groundwork for wider adoption of hydrogen across naval bases and maritime sectors. By transforming waste into energy, Babcock is helping to shape a cleaner, more resilient future and proving that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand.
