Plymouth Hospitals strive for a greener future

University Hospitals Plymouth (UHP) NHS Trust is a key player in the social and physical fabric of Plymouth life. As a large employer and an epicentre of healthcare, the hospital has a social responsibility and is working hard to demonstrate action in the face of the climate crisis to limit the impact on the environment.

The hospital has a dedicated ‘Green Army’ who work hard to deliver the organisation’s Green Plan. Refreshed only recently, this Green Plan includes ambitious goals such as:

• Reduce the Trust’s NHS Carbon Footprint by 80% by 2032, and achieve net zero by 2040
• Reduce the Trust’s NHS Carbon Footprint Plus (including our wider supply chain) by 80% by 2039, and achieve net zero by 2045
• Achieve 10% net biodiversity gain by 2030, across the UHP estate.

UHP NHS Trust, which includes Derriford Hospital, also shares its sustainability journey on its Positively Green blog to inspire and spread the message about green initiatives.

Through Trust-wide engagement, the Green Army team facilitate the greening of processes across the hospital and report their many successes and collaborations on their blog, Positively Green.

The hospital works closely with local partners in their sustainability efforts- working with Plymouth City Council, Beryl Bikes, local schools and organisations working towards the delivery of their Green Plan.
