Climate resilience in Stonehouse

Undergraduate architecture students from Oxford Brookes University have been working on a series of live projects in collaboration with Nudge Community Builders, based on Union Street.

The projects, running this academic year are exploring how climate change is impacting Stonehouse, what needs to happen locally and what is already happening. Meanwhile, the participating students have been encouraged to think creatively about how they can position themselves as ‘Agents of Change’ to help the local community understand the key issues and be empowered to take action.

First up, the students held a climate action event at The Plot, Union Street, before moving onto the Community Climate Centre facilitating conversations with the local community.

As part of the event, five booths were created to communicate five climate issues in novel and creative ways:

• Embodied carbon
• Sustainable fashion
• Extreme heat events
• Flooding
• Energy Costs and Sources

The programme has involved students working collaboratively with Nudge Community Builders, giving students the experience of working with a real client on real life challenges, developing their professional skills and employability.

The project is continuing until the end of the academic year with students proposing carbon positive solutions for the Two Trees and Weston Approach Sites.
