We hate to admit it, but the days are already getting shorter. It's officially time to make the most of the best riding season, before it's too late...

Summer is peak commuting-by-bike season, serving up good vibes all week long. The sun’s up before your alarm, the evenings stretch on, and the idea of being stuck in a stuffy bus or a packed train carriage feels pretty bad.

If you’re even a little bit curious about getting on two wheels, this is your sign to make a start. Here’s why summer is the optimum time to get started and how to do it with zero stress.

Why summer is the best season to ride

  • Maximise outside time: take the scenic route, ride through the park and soak up the sun while it lasts.
  • You’ll feel better: a short cycle in daylight wakes you up gently and clears your head before the day starts.
  • It builds confidence: if you’re new to cycling, summer means less rain, better visibility, and more riders around to feel supported.

Here are 5 tips to get started before summer ends:

  • Start small
Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Try cycling one or two days a week, or just for part of your route. Build up gradually.
  • Practice your route on a weekend
A fun run helps you feel more confident (and you won’t be late figuring it out on Monday morning).
  • Wear what you like
You don’t need special gear. Lightweight clothes, a backpack can usually do the trick. Just remember to throw in a layer for the weather days that like to keep you on your toes.
  • Use shared bikes
Not got your own bike or simply want a hassle-free way to get somewhere fast? In Plymouth, you can grab an e-bike anytime without worrying about getting it out of the door and keeping it secure outside.
  • Go electric if you want a boost
E-bikes make hills and longer distances feel easy and fun. You’ll arrive metaphorically and quite literally sweat-free!

Set the pace now and keep it going all year

Summer won’t last forever, but the habit you start now just might. One ride could be all it takes to change the way you get around and keep you going on two wheels – all year round!
