About our climate journey

Carbon Sense started around a simple conviction, that climate action shouldn’t feel overwhelming or inaccessible for SME’s. I began as a small Cornwall-based consultancy helping SMEs understand their carbon footprint properly, not as a tick-box exercise, but as a foundation for real change. Growth has been steady and purposeful, we now support organisations across multiple sectors with full Scope 1 - 3 footprints, Carbon Reduction Plans and practical decarbonisation strategies. The journey hasn’t been without pressure, cashflow, evolving regulations, and helping organisations move from hesitation to action have all been challenges.

But the wider benefit has been seeing confidence grow. Businesses that once felt unsure where to start or how to speak clearly about their emissions, their responsibilities and their plans, can now move forward with more confidence.

Biggest climate achievement to date

Helping organisations move from “we think we’re sustainable” to having a clear, quantified baseline and a realistic reduction pathway. Turning uncertainty into clarity is always the biggest win. We have supported over 100 business in Devon and Cornwall this last 2 years to make some meaningful change and be a better business in some way. Across all clients, we have helped measure and influence over 500,000 tonnes of CO₂e to date, with tangible reduction plans coming through energy optimisation, fleet transition, supply-chain engagement and operational efficiencies.

Most difficult climate challenge faced

A major challenge has been the lack of clear, consistent direction from global leaders. Mixed policy signals and the continued dominance of oil and gas slow momentum and create uncertainty for businesses wanting to invest in long-term climate solutions. That’s why action at organisational level matters so much. Embedding sustainability and clear emission-reduction targets doesn’t just help the environment it builds leaner, more resilient businesses that are better prepared for the regulatory and market shifts already underway. Helping organisations to measure their scope 3 supply chain emissions, understand their real impact and influence them often sits beyond their direct control brings complexity and discourages action. SMEs lack structured data systems, and larger organisations often underestimate the complexity of value-chain emissions. Balancing accuracy, proportionality and practicality is a constant challenge, especially when clients are under time pressure from procurement portals, NHS requirements or investor demands.

Best climate advice or tip for others

Start. Measure honestly. Improve steadily. Climate action doesn’t have to be perfect, it has to be credible and consistent. Don’t try to do everything at once. A clear, phased pathway builds confidence, capability and momentum. Climate action becomes far more achievable when it’s integrated into commercial strategy rather than treated as a separate sustainability project.
