We’ve been helping students to get the skills and qualifications they need since 1887 and we’re now one of the leading providers of vocational, professional and technical training in the South West.

About our climate journey

City College Plymouth fosters a learning environment and organisational culture that impacts positively on the health, wellbeing and sustainability of our community and enables all of our students and staff to achieve their full potential.

Our mission is to promote and integrate sustainable practices in every aspect of our College. We aim to reduce our carbon footprint, promote the use of renewable energy, minimise waste and consumption, and support environmental education and outreach.

We equip our learners with the skills to make a difference, whilst providing our staff with access to free training, which in turn will have a positive impact on our College, our community and their lives. We collaborate with partners to build sustainable practices that have collective environmental and social impacts considering every challenge that the world faces.

To us, sustainability means that we are focussing on clear targets, which are owned by all of our staff and students and clearly visible for all to see, review and engage in, with a growing number of representative student and staff bodies from across the College from our student union through to our executive leadership team.

We have used Hillside Environmental Consultants to establish our baseline emissions and support in our reporting. We have applied for SALIX funding and will discover the outcome of that application in January, when we will be able to identify a clearer timeline for changes to our estate to support our journey to net zero. We will be writing a Climate Action plan in 2025 and we monitor and report yearly through SECR

Carbon Literacy is an awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis. We know how important it is to ensure our staff are Carbon Literate and better interact with our communities which is why we regularly offer Carbon Literacy training throughout the year. We’re proud to have achieved Bronze Carbon Literacy Accreditation and have our sights firmly set on the Silver and Gold awards.
