From community health and wellbeing clinics to striving for net carbon zero, the University continues to be radically inclusive and innovative, and inspires its students to be courageous leaders, fighters for change, and inconveniently excellent.

The University, which came to Plymouth in 1973 after 130 years in London, has a growing research centre in the Marjon Doctoral College (MDC). MDC aims to affect social change through research, investigating challenges and issues our society currently faces and producing helpful research to support evidence and human action.

What we provide

Plymouth Marjon University is a small community with a big personality. Fondly known as Marjon, the University delivers high-quality education to its students from Apprenticeships and Foundation degrees to Undergraduate and Postgraduate education, including PhDs.

Marjon degrees surround three main areas; education, health and wellbeing, and sport, exercise and rehabilitation. The University has been educating teachers and leaders for over 180 years with many Marjon Alumni progressing to be headteachers and sector pioneers.

Accreditations

About our climate journey

In 2019, Plymouth Marjon University called a climate emergency. The University subsequently held a Climate Conference involving students, staff, wider stakeholders and the Plymouth community. Following the conference, Marjon Zero, the University's initiative to be net carbon zero by 2030, was born.

In 2020, Marjon installed approximately 2000 solar panels, saving 300 tonnes of carbon per year (tCO2e) and switched out its lighting with energy-efficient LED bulbs.

In 2022, the University finished its Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) project, the largest national non-domestic project of its kind at the time. The GSHPs will save 617 tonnes of carbon per year (tCO2e), equivalent to the energy use from 65 homes, burning 1260 barrels of oil, or charging 66 million smartphones!

In 2023, skilled staff and talented students at Plymouth Marjon partnered with Pollenize CIC to complete a biodiversity audit to discover and understand the variety of plants and wildlife residing on the University's sprawling green campus. Later that year, a wildflower meadow was created in the Marjon Quad. In the same year, the University also joined the Plymouth Charter and the Plastic Free Plymouth directory for its efforts to conserve energy and eliminate single-use plastics from its campus.

In future phases of the Marjon Zero project, Plymouth Marjon University plans to retrofit current buildings and make its campus a greener space by expanding our green social spaces and biodiversity around campus.
