Real Green Concrete (RGC) provides a scalable net-zero solution for the construction industry by replacing conventional Portland cement (OPC) with a high-performance, 100% OPC-free cementitious binder. RGC uses industrial by-products and waste materials to significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with concrete production, with a potential reduction in global warming potential of at least 68% compared with OPC. The technology can be tailored for applications including ready-mix, precast, high-performance and rapid-setting concrete, enabling existing concrete manufacturing processes to transition towards lower-carbon production without fundamental changes to conventional infrastructure.

What we provide

Real Green Concrete (RGC) provides a patented, 100% OPC-free cementitious binder technology designed to replace conventional Portland cement in concrete and other construction applications. Manufactured using industrial by-products and waste materials, the RGC binder can reduce Global Warming Potential by at least 68% compared with OPC. The technology can be tailored for ready-mix, precast, reinforced, high-performance, pervious and rapid-setting concrete applications. RGC also provides technical consultancy on low-carbon construction materials, sustainable material development and industrial waste management, helping organisations identify opportunities to reduce carbon emissions, improve resource efficiency and develop value from waste streams. RGC works with manufacturers, contractors, and industrial partners to optimise materials, conduct trials, and support the transition to more sustainable and circular construction practices.

About our climate journey

Real Green Concrete (RGC), the technology brand of UNA Developments Ltd, began its development journey in 2019, driven by the need to reduce the substantial carbon footprint of conventional Portland cement (OPC). Developed by Dr Aissa Bouaissi, RGC has developed a patented, 100% OPC-free cementitious binder using industrial by-products and waste materials, with the potential to reduce global warming potential by at least 68% compared with OPC. The technology has progressed from laboratory development to industrial trials and demonstrations across a range of concrete applications. Beyond carbon reduction, RGC supports the circular economy by diverting industrial waste from disposal while offering opportunities for high strength, durability, rapid setting and improved resource efficiency. The next steps are to complete optimisation, independent testing and certification, expand industrial-scale demonstrations, establish reliable supply chains, and accelerate commercial deployment through manufacturing partnerships, licensing and adoption by concrete and precast producers.

Biggest climate achievement to date

RGC’s biggest climate achievement to date is developing and successfully validating a 100% OPC-free binder that produces practical, high-performance concrete while reducing Global Warming Potential by at least 68% compared with conventional OPC. Since beginning development in 2019, RGC has progressed from laboratory research to real-world industrial trials, including successful concrete block production and an Innovate UK-supported pervious concrete project. These achievements demonstrate that significant carbon reduction can be pursued without abandoning conventional concrete applications or requiring fundamentally different production infrastructure. RGC’s technology also incorporates industrial by-products and waste materials, supporting resource efficiency and the circular economy.

Most difficult climate challenge faced

The biggest challenge faced by RGC has been translating an innovative low-carbon binder technology from laboratory development into a consistent, scalable and commercially viable solution for the construction industry. This has required extensive formulation optimisation, testing and industrial trials to achieve the required balance of strength, workability, setting time, durability and cost across different applications and raw-material sources. A further challenge has been demonstrating that RGC can be integrated reliably into existing concrete production processes while meeting industry standards and customer requirements. Overcoming these technical and commercial barriers has required collaboration with industrial partners, testing organisations and research institutions. The experience has highlighted that decarbonising concrete requires not only a lower-carbon material, but also robust performance, quality control, certification, reliable supply chains and confidence from the wider construction industry.

Best climate advice or tip for others

Our advice to others working on climate innovation is to focus on practical impact as well as technical innovation. A solution must not only demonstrate environmental benefits but also deliver reliable performance, scalability and commercial value. Start with a clear understanding of the real-world problem, test the technology rigorously, learn from failures, and work closely with industry partners from an early stage. Collaboration is particularly important when moving from laboratory research to industrial deployment. Most importantly, be persistent: climate technologies often require significant time, testing and optimisation before they are ready for the market. Progress may be gradual, but each successful trial provides valuable evidence and brings the technology closer to meaningful, large-scale climate impact.
