Innovating sustainable lighting solutions for a brighter future.

Thorlux Lighting is a globally recognised manufacturer of luminaires and lighting control systems.

Headquartered in Worcestershire, UK, its modern 16,882 m² factory is just a few miles from where Frederick William Thorpe first manufactured Thorlux luminaires in 1936. Thorlux proudly manufactures over 90% of its products in the Midlands, employing over five hundred people locally.

Thorlux is a complete lighting solutions partner, a single point of contact for luminaires, controls, design, installation, and more. Sustainability and environmental care are written in the organisation’s DNA, with a 2040 net-zero greenhouse gas emissions target.

As part of the FW Thorpe Plc Group, Thorlux remains family-driven, with the Thorpe family actively involved in the organisation. Nearly ninety years after its foundation, Thorlux remains at the forefront of efficient, high-quality lighting technology.

About our climate journey

For the last two decades, Thorlux has worked hard to reduce its environmental impact, and we are proud of the progress we have made. But recognising that there is still much to do to safeguard the environment, protect natural resources and avoid the worst effects of climate change, Thorlux has set the ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.

Biggest climate achievement to date

Thorlux has been officially recognised as carbon neutral, with systems of reduction, measurement and certified offsetting in place, since 2012. This decade-long status has been assessed by an independent third party using the international ISO 14064-1 standard, which measures greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals. This recognition confirms Thorlux's ongoing commitment to sustainability across its global operations.

Most difficult climate challenge faced

The company constantly challenges itself to find new ways to reduce waste through cumulative process improvements. For example, it is working to reduce and eliminate single-use plastics, as well as streamlining and optimising many of its operations throughout the facility. A four-day week has also been adopted in the spray shop, reducing the amount of gas used in the drying ovens through improved efficiency.

Several Thorlux employees have passed the Green Belt Lean Six Sigma training course. Lean Six Sigma is a method that relies on a collaborative team effort to improve performance by systematically removing waste and reducing defects or mistakes. Over a dozen lean manufacturing apprenticeships are currently in progress, and the company is also exploring Yellow and Black Belt Lean Six Sigma training.
