Cycle storage upgrades across city

Plymouth is set to benefit from the significant expansion of both short- and long-term secure cycle locker facilities across the city.

Among the new arrivals are 44 long-term, secure cycle lockers suitable for people who want to cycle but perhaps don’t have the storage for a bike at home and can be hired on an annual basis.

The new lockers, which have been manufactured here in the city by local company BikeAway, have been funded by the Department for Transport’s Active Travel Fund and bring the number of spaces available across the city to 170.

Meanwhile, short-term cycle storage lockers, each capable of storing two bikes, are also set for expansion thanks to five new Bike Hubs – a modern, app-bookable locker system with bike parking available at an hourly rate.

The Bike Hubs are provided by BikeAway at no cost to the Council, and users can download the app via bikehubs.co.uk, the Apple App Store, or Google Play.

Councillor John Stephens, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Transport, said: “This new cycle infrastructure is a real boost for sustainable transport in Plymouth and I’m delighted to see it installed.

“To some, this may seem a small measure but the long-term effect of improvements like this are crucial. Put simply, we are building it so that they will come…

“Getting people out of their cars and onto their bikes won’t happen overnight but if we can continue to provide the infrastructure that breaks down another barrier to making that choice then together we will be able to get to a better place.”
