Electric vehicle chargepoint grants: what’s changing from 1 April 2026?

If you’re thinking about installing an electric vehicle (EV) chargepoint at home or at your work, there are some important changes coming to government grants. These updates affect who can apply, how much funding is available and which schemes are closing.

Here’s a simple overview to help you stay up to date.

Grants closing on 31 March 2026

Three existing schemes will come to an end. After this date, no new applications will be accepted for:

• the staff and fleets grant
• the commercial landlord chargepoint grant
• the residential landlord infrastructure grant

New and updated grants from 1 April 2026

Most of the remaining grants will continue for one more year, until 31 March 2027, with updated funding levels.

For homes

The following schemes will stay open, with funding available until March 2027:

• flats and renters grant
• residential landlord chargepoint grant
• households with on‑street parking grant

What’s changing?

• The maximum grant will increase from £350 to £500 per socket for applications made from 1 April.
• A new “Find a grant” service will replace the current application portal.
• Applicants will need to create an account and apply directly through the new system.

If you applied before 1 April, you can re‑apply using the new service to access the higher £500 rate (only if your chargepoint has not yet been installed),

For workplaces

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) will continue, with funding available until March 2027.

What’s changing?

• The maximum grant will increase from £350 to £500 per socket for installations completed from 1 April. This applies even if you applied before that date.

For state‑funded education institutions

The WCS for education settings will remain open until March 2027.

What’s changing?

• The maximum grant will decrease from £2,500 to £2,000 per socket for applications made from 1 April.
• Applications made before 1 April will still receive £2,500 per socket if vouchers are used by 30 September 2026.
