January in Plymouth can feel challenging – shorter days, colder weather and plenty of rain. It’s easy to feel low or anxious, especially when you add climate change worries into the mix. But by taking small steps for the planet can also support your mental wellbeing. Here are some simple, positive actions to help you feel brighter this winter.
1. Get outside and notice nature
Fresh air and natural light are powerful mood boosters. A stroll along Plymouth Hoe or a wander through Central Park can help you feel more energised and connected to nature. Notice the trees, the sea and the local wildlife – reminders of why protecting our environment matters.
2. Do one positive thing for the planet
Climate action gives us a sense of purpose. Try reducing your food waste, choosing one of the many sustainable public transport options instead of driving, or planting pollinator-friendly flowers in your garden on or on your balcony. Every action counts and it’s great for Plymouth too. Get inspired by checking out our Quick Wins page!
3. Share and connect with others
Join a local sustainability group or chat with friends about what you’re doing to live greener. Community is powerful – it helps us to feel less alone and more hopeful about the future. Find climate conscious organisations in the city on our Who’s Who page or check out environmentally-focussed events in your area to see what’s out there. Why not come to our Climate Mingle on 11th February to get you started?
4. Bring light and movement into your day
Peel back the curtains, open your windows wide and let the fresh air in. Make time for a brisk walk, even if it’s just around your neighbourhood, or sit and have your morning cuppa in the garden or by a window. These small habits can make winter feel that little bit brighter.
Looking after your mental health and caring for the planet go hand in hand. Every positive step helps create a healthier, happier Plymouth – for you and future generations.
Keep going, brighter days are ahead, and spring is right around the corner.
