This September, Plymouth is stepping up for Car Free Day and we’re inviting everyone to take part. Whether you walk, cycle, bus or scoot, every car-free journey helps us move closer to our net zero goal.

To mark Car Free Day on 22 September, Climate Connections has launched two campaigns to help residents, families, schools and workplaces rethink how they travel.

Step Into September

This walking-focused campaign invites you to take on the ‘22,000 Steps for the Planet’ challenge, simply put, taking just 1,000 steps a day for 22 days. It’s a simple, healthy way to cut carbon, connect with your community, and explore Plymouth on foot. Whether it’s a lunchtime stroll, a walk to school, or a weekend wander, every step counts.

Pedal Forward Plymouth

Prefer wheels to walking? Join the ’22 for 22′ pledge of 22 car-free journeys by 22 September. Hop on a Beryl Bike, dust off your own, or borrow one from a friend. Cycling is a brilliant way to reduce emissions, save money and feel good.

Supporting Catch the Bus Month

September also marks the national Catch the Bus Month campaign, which we’re proud to support. Taking the bus is one of the easiest ways to reduce your carbon footprint, especially for short trips around the city. Plymouth’s bus network offers over 100 routes in and around our city, including travel on new electric buses, making it easier than ever to leave the car at home.

Why it matters

Transport is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions in Plymouth. By choosing active travel, even for short trips, we can make a real difference – together.

Not only this but sustainable and active travel can have so many benefits, from keeping us fit and healthy as we move our bodies more and helping to save a few pennies!
