Plymouth Energy Community (PEC) has been named the winner of the 2026 Ashden Award for Local Energy Innovation.
The award recognises organisations that are helping tackle climate change while improving people’s lives. PEC was one of five winners announced at a ceremony at London’s National Gallery on June 18.
The charity supports people across Plymouth with energy advice, helping anyone facing high bills, energy debt and cold homes. It also helps residents make their properties more energy efficient and supports community groups and businesses to install solar panels.
Over the years, PEC’s advice service has helped around 14,000 people, including 5,700 in 2025 alone. Since 2021, it has helped improve more than 400 homes and supports 33 community-owned solar power projects across the city.
Collaboration is where we make things happen.
Clare Mains, Advice Lead at Plymouth Energy Community, said: “Every day, we have the privilege of working alongside residents and professionals who want the best for Plymouth people. What we share in common is understanding that local matters, because we can’t build a fairer energy system alone. Collaboration is where we make things happen.”
“Last year, we worked with 2,000 families. We also worked with more than 100 partners, businesses and investors – not just fixing energy problems, but building a future that people can see themselves in. We’re delighted to be recognised by Ashden for the difference we make, and would like to thank them for this opportunity.”
A key part of PEC’s success has been its long-term partnership with Plymouth City Council, helping local communities have more control over how energy is produced and used.
The Ashden Awards celebrate organisations from the UK and around the world that are finding practical ways to tackle climate change. This year’s five winners will share a £120,000 prize fund and receive support to help grow their work.
Ashden chief executive Dr Ashok Sinha said: “These winners show how climate action can build stronger and fairer communities. They are creating benefits for local people, including lower energy bills, new jobs and healthier places to live.”
Ashden is a London-based charity that supports projects focused on clean energy and environmental solutions. Its patron is King Charles III.
