Offset GHGs we can't stop

Although we need to focus our efforts on reducing our carbon emissions to the lowest possible level first, it is likely that there’ll be some emissions that we can’t stop. So we need to find other ways to get to net zero.

This is where carbon offsetting comes in. Essentially, it means reducing GHG emissions somewhere else to compensate for our emissions. Or it can be an increase in carbon storage e.g. through planting trees or restoring peat.

New schemes are under development in Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall, which will provide local options for those wishing to offset the emissions they are unable to stop.

These include schemes to use nature to remove carbon from the atmosphere, such as tree planting and sea grass restoration. Local schemes to help reduce carbon, such as supporting the retrofit of homes, are also under consideration.

With all offsetting, it is important to invest in high quality projects which have long term management arrangements in place. This section will be updated and expanded as soon as more information is available.
